Wearing armor in Fallout 4 is important to survivability, there are plenty of different armor choices throughout the game. One of the key ingredients for a good set of armor is a helmet, they don’t provide the biggest boost of all components but it is necessary to have a good helmet. Of course this isn’t completely set in stone, if you prefer one piece of head-wear over the other for aesthetic purposes then feel free to keep it. However, if you want the best helmet possible, here’s a list of the 10 best helmets in Fallout 4!
Please note: This list uses helmets from the base game only.
10. Mascot Head
This rather bizarre head piece can only be obtained once, making it a unique item. It can be found in the D.B Technical High School location, it was originally part of a mascot costume for the school. It provides no physical resistance but 5 energy resistance.
9. Blue Battling Helmet
This item is fairly common to find and provides decent resistances at early levels. With 2 physical resistance and 5 energy resistance, it’s a great helmet to start off with. It can be found in a number of stores and is also commonly worn by Minutemen.
8. Welding Helmet
This helmet is quite awesome aesthetically, it provides 3 physical resistance and 5 energy resistance. It’s not that easy to find though, as you need to be involved with the Brotherhood of Steel to encounter a scribe who wears it. Just to point out, the mask part does not cover the face.
7. Flight Helmet
No doubt you’ve already obtained one of the variations of the Flight Helmet. Each variation has different colors and builds but they all provide the same resistances. They can be found all over the place, from shops to random loot. They are most commonly found on Gunners or Raiders though. They provide 3 physical resistance and 5 energy resistance.
6. Green Rag Hat
Weirdly, this hat can be upgraded to have extremely high resistances, although this requires some things to be completed to do so. The base rag has 0 physical resistance but 10 energy resistance. It can be found in stores but the easiest way to obtain one is wait for a settler to appear who is wearing it.
5. Medical Goggles
This interesting helmet is quite rare but awesome aesthetically and with good resistances. The same as the Rag Hat, it has no physical resistances but a nice 10 energy resistance. It’s found only by two methods, either via a Brotherhood of Steel scribe or the wreckage of a certain airship.
4. Army Helmet
The typical helmet wore by troopers, the Army Helmet provides the player with a more traditional style of combat headwear. With 10 physical damage resistance, it’s great for early levels and found almost anywhere you can find deceased bodies of pre-nuke soldiers. Gunners and Raiders may also be wearing this often.
3. Metal Helmet
With 9 physical resistance and 4 energy resistance, this helmet provides decent coverage of the two damage types. While not usually found until a good 10 levels after the Army Helmet, it’s a perfect upgrade. Similar to the Army Helmet, you will most likely find this on Gunners and Raiders.
2. Synth Helmet
The image shown above is of the Synth Field Helmet, different from the Synth Helmet as it has a mask, although they have the same resistances. The Field variant is much harder to obtain, you can only get it by killing Synths who are wearing them. The normal Synth Helmet can be obtained from stores in the Institute or killing Synths. They provide 9 physical resistance and 11 energy resistances.
1. Combat Armor Helmet
The most powerful helmet in the game is the Combat Armor Helmet, you can also get Brotherhood of Steel variations too. This is part of the Combat Armor set, found rarely at low levels on Gunners and Raiders. As you level up, you’ll encounter these sets more. With a great balance of 10 resistances for both physical and energy damage, it’s the best helmet in the game!

The irradiated Commonwealth of Fallout 4 is an often hostile environment, and not just thanks to the ghouls, deathclaws, and super mutants who call it home. So what better way to approach the place than in a suit of working ODST armor, which keeps Halo’s Orbital Drop Shock Troopers safe and cool on the nastiest of planets?
A team of modders has made three suits of ODST armor usable in Fallout 4, and they look extremely sharp. They’re customizable, and have the kind of stats you’d expect from a far-future space-borne special forces kit: protection against ballistic and thermal weapons, plus climate control for extreme environments.
The mod, which you can find for PC over on NexusMods, includes the three ODST armor sets and four helmets. You can customize the skins, visor colors, glow colors, and HUD, and even write your name on the chestplate. The armors have multiple variants and come with several optional attachments, like night vision.
What’s extra neat about this mod is that it doesn’t just plunk Halo armor into the game and set you running around with it straight away (unless you want to, of course). The modders have built a new area under the Castle where you can find the new gear – it’s guarded, naturally, but there are also new secrets and lore to discover along the way.
There are a couple things to be aware of when installing the mod: First, you’ll also need the Fallout 4 Script Extender and Scrivener’s HUD Overlay Framework (if you want to use the custom HUDs). Second, you’ll want to have a character with a fairly thin body shape to avoid stretching the new ODST models out. The Nexus page has ideal points on the character creation triangle for both male and female characters for reference.
Once you’ve got the mod installed, you can either head to the Castle to search for the new gear, or alternatively build it yourself at the new ODST HoloBench that it adds to the game.

Fallout 4, Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG became the first game on Xbox One to utilize mods on console. Mods are a coup for Xbox One users who want to alter their game, and there are mods for practically everything. There are so many to go through, so it can be hard to know where to start. We've compiled a comprehensive list of the most rewarding, interesting and weird mods available.
Any mods requiring additional content and DLC will say so.
You'll need to a make a Bethesda account to access the mods which you can do from within the game on your Xbox.
Note: Achievements are disabled while mods are active.
THE BIG ONE - Cheat Mode Ultimate Holotape Menu
This mod, while tiny in size, is freaking huge in terms of capability. Most people will probably look for this type of thing first. The Cheat Mod Ultimate Holotape offers all the standard things you might expect, God Mode, Unlimited Carry Weight, Infinite Ammo, Max Perk and S.P.E.C.I.A.L points. But it goes so much further than that: extra inventory slots, easy lockpicking and terminal access, add weapons (DLC if installed and base game), spawn enemies or settlers, add crafting materials.. AND SO MUCH MORE!
This is the best place to start if you want to power your way through the game with little to stand in your way. It will always be in the top slot of your miscellaneous items menu, and the menu is accessed via your Pip-Boy and at any time. Perfect.
The Unofficial Patch
With a game as large as Fallout 4, there are bound to be hundreds of minor bugs. The Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch irons out as many kinks as could be found. It's a hefty mod, and requires being at the very top of your mod list to activate.
Improved Maps and Visible Roads
The Pip-Boy map can be a bit.. gritty. Improved Maps with Visible Roads greatly increases the visibility of everything on the screen by a significant margin. The vibrancy of the lines are much brighter, and roads are now easier to see, making following a path or planning your route much easier.
Full Dialogue Interface
When someone speaks to you in the Commonwealth, you're given options of a couple of words for each dialogue choice. This mod stacks the dialogue options in full, so you can see in advance what your choices are and what the full response will be. This makes the dialogue options more in keeping with how they were in Fallout 3. The mod will also display the 'tone' of the choice, so if you're hoping to give a snappy response, it'll be clearly displayed with a 'tonal inflection' — no more accidental sarcastic responses to people you need to butter up.
Green in the Commonwealth
Green in the Commonwealth adds a boost of much-needed color to the Commonwealth environments. You could argue that after 200 years since the nuclear bombs dropped, at least some of the grass and leaves would probably have grown back in that time.
The Commonwealth is bleak and desolate much of the time, and Green in the Commonwealth adds extra greenery textures; including flowers, lush bushes, and plants. This mod is aesthetic only but certainly does add a level of immensity that some felt was lacking before.
Stronger Workshop Defenses
Stronger Workshop Defenses adds a lot stronger defense items to your workshop menus, and the great thing is, it requires no additional perks. If your survivor bases are suffering, you can throw down some insane turrets which will rip through any raiders that come knocking.
Scrap Everything
It's a little irritating when you're trying to build a settlement for survivors, and there are things that you can't remove to add one more desperately needed power generator. With Scrap Everything you can remove almost everything. If you wanted to strip a settlement to the bare rock and build from the bottom upwards, you can.
Beantown Interiors Project - Requires Far Harbor DLC
This is an interesting mod, in that some abandoned and boarded up buildings around the Commonwealth are now open and available to use. There are currently 12 newly opened buildings in and around the Commonwealth, being situated in Concord, Lexington, Forest Grove Marsh, and Jamaica Plains.
The Beantown Interiors Project concept of opening and using abandoned buildings was also used in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
True Storms - Requires Far Harbor DLC
If you've played Fallout 4, you have probably encountered the weather systems. Radiation storms will ignite the skies with green lightning, causing the player to take radiation damage if they're caught outside. The True Storms mod adds new weather patterns, including radiation rain, dust storms, heavy fog or rain among other things. Interior sound effects for the weather have also been added.
Institue Portal Gun
This gun does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a gun, that you can use to travel to otherwise unreachable areas. Is there something hiding on top of that building? Whip out your Institute Portal Gun, take aim and fire to instantly move to the target. Planning on picking a pocket? Use your gun to create a quick getaway. Being chased by a Randy Savage Deathclaw (see below)? Use the gun for instant evasion! Or maybe you're over-encumbered and you've been looting the abandoned homes of the Commonwealth. Your pockets are full to bursting, and you just can't move. The gun solves this problem too!
Dauntless - Submarine Player Home - Requires Far Harbor DLC
Do you want your own submarine you can use as a base? Of course, you do! Dauntless is not only a player home, but you can drive it around! It's not quite a Winnebago, but a moveable home adds a layer of security to moving around the Commonwealth.
A Cannibal in Concord
Oh my word, this mod is macabre. If you want to inject a creepy and morbid vibe to your game, this mod A Cannibal in Concord adds a horror questline based on real cannibals and serial killers. Lurching off the standard quest path, this mod includes puzzles that will need the player to move things around and search for clues in a creepy basement. Companions are made to wait outside (the mod creator states this is because there isn't room for the player in amongst everything surrounding you) making this mod one of the eeriest and unsettling to play. And it's twisted to boot!
Macho Claws
Deathclaws are the number 1 cause of death in the whole Commonwealth. They're utterly terrifying — the huge jaws, the massive flesh shredding claws.. What if we made them a little less scarier? With this mod, you can change the Deathclaws into WWE Superstar Macho Man Randy Savage. It's dumb as hell, but also hilarious. Download Macho Claws here.
Renovated Furniture
Tired of making semi-decent settlements and being disappointed by the threadbare assortment of furniture to kit them out with? Renovated Furniture inserts over 120 new pieces of furniture into the game that don't look like they have been pulled out of the garbage. Cleaner textures for tables, fridges, chairs, bookcases and more are all part of one tiny file. Radiation fallout is so tough to remove from upholstery..
Commonwealth Cuts
I might not be the only person who thinks the default hairstyles in Fallout (in general) are pretty terrible. They're ugly, boring and a crime against Commonwealth fashion. Commonwealth Cuts inserts lots of new hairstyles in the character creation menu. You'll never look back the greasy-looking default hair textures once you get your hands on Commonwealth Cuts.
Wasteland Creatures Redone
Wasteland Creatures Redone is a retexture mod for most of the lesser enemies and monsters found in Fallout 4. It is pretty large, more than 400mb, but it's great if you're bored of staring down the same old Mirelurks and Bloatflies, etc. A full list of the monsters retextured is in the link.
Submersible Power Armor
This power armor, inspired by the Big Daddies in Bioshock is totally kick-ass. It increases your carry weight, boosts your movement speed, and can even go underwater. Further to this, is has a cool lamp that comes in different colors to light up the depths. While there is one Power Armor set, it has different helmets that represent the different types of Daddies in Bioshock. It's a tank in human clothing. Get it here.
The Wild Wasteland
The Wild Wasteland was a trait from Fallout New Vegas that made exploration a little more unpredictable. Remember the 'Indiana Jones Found Dead in a Refridgerator' moment from New Vegas? That was down to The Wild Wasteland trait which brings random encounters and events, as well as odd items and easter eggs. This trait isn't in Fallout 4, but a mod has been made to emulate it.
CROSS_Cybernetics
Power armor brings such huge defense bonuses, but they require Fusion Cores to remain powered, and they're not always in plentiful supply. CROSS_Cybernetics allows you to create and equip a modular set of 'lite power armor' from its Cyber Crafting Bench, which can be added to settlements. The pieces can be individually upgraded and modded and come in a large range of colors. The best thing? No batteries required.
D.E.C.A.Y Better Ghouls
Ghouls are the highly mutated, radiation damaged humanoids that love to launch themselves at you in groups. They're pink, gross and their mouths gape disgustingly, but once you've fought one, you've fought them all. D.E.C.A.Y Better Ghouls adds variety in the ghoul's skin textures. Some will have moldy skin, exposed bones, missing parts and more. Ghouls are already pretty grim, and this mod adds an extra dollop of grossness.
Everyone's Best Friend
Dogmeat is undeniably the best four-legged companion of any game in recent years. Originally, you were going to be able to have Dogmeat in addition to one of the game's other companions, but this was changed before the final release of the game. Everyone's Best Friend mod allows you to have both Dogmeat and another regular companion follow you on your travels. Triple the attack power available, triple the fun, right?!
Nuka Cola Filler Machine
Bottles, bottles everywhere and not a drop to drink. This is a cool and interesting mod. The Commonwealth is stuffed with empty Nuka Cola bottles, and beyond scavenging them for glass materials, they're pretty useless. What if you could fill them back up with that life giving Nuka nectar? Now you can, with the Nuka Cola Filling Machine! Drop it into one of your settlements, ensure it's powered sufficiently, and fill away. The machine takes a bottle and a bottlecap and fills the bottle up with that sweet life giving liquid.
Dark Husky Dogmeat
Dogmeat again, I can't get enough of this pixellated pooch. This time, you can retexture him into a Dark Husky Dogmeat. The mod doesn't do anything else. It just gives him a fresh look!
Real Nights with Real Lights
If you wanted to be even more terrified at night in the Commonwealth, Real Nights with Real Lights is for you. This mod makes nights darker and increases the range of lights. Most natural light sources are turned way down, so if you're out in the wilderness and far from settlements, it's going to be nigh on pitch black.

The ODST battle armor, or Battle Dress Uniform (BDU for short) is a suit of combat armor worn exclusively by the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, the special-operatives of the UNSC Marine Corps.
DesignEdit
The ODST Battle Dress Uniform is the signature piece of equipment used by the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers - the armor is vacuum-rated, capable of Extra-Vehicular Activity for fifteen minutes.[3] The armor provides numerous advantages in the field, including ballistic protection, temperature control, as well as thermal insulation against extreme temperatures experienced during atmospheric entry and thermal protection from Covenant energy weapons.
Fallout 4 Halo Spartan Armor
The ODST Armor has gone through several design changes since the start of the Human-Covenant War. The current version incorporates technology initially developed for the Mjolnir Armor. This includes CTCs for body armor, titanium and ceramic composite armor plating to give the user added protection - along with HUD and Communications Systems to give more situational awareness to the wearer.[4]
The ODST BDU has been in use for well over 50 years by the 105th, and remains unmatched in its ability to protect its wearer over other BDUs during the toughest operations. The BDU excels at providing more protection against small arms fire than other infantry body armor, and also excels at allowing a trooper to conduct Military Operations in Urban Terrain without the slightest chance of being detected in dark locations.
The BDU's stealth capability is partly thanks to its black and gray camouflage patterns on the legs, boots, gloves, chest, helmet and undersuit - these urban camouflage patterns are optional; without the camouflage panels, the BDU is black. On the left shoulder pad of every ODST is a UNSC MED REF patch.[5][6][7] This patch contains basic medical information about the trooper, and allows a UNSC certified medic to gain a quick medical reference to an ODST wounded in the field. Despite the armor's obvious advantage over standard infantry armor, it is still vulnerable to Covenant energy weapons, larger armor piercing rounds, as well as large explosive devices.
ComponentsEdit
The ODST battle dress uniform is made up of several different components and layers that make the suit what it is, while technology from other projects across the military have been incorporated into the suit, ODST equipment still has proprietary technology that has not been adopted into other equipment for the military.
HelmetEdit
The ODST helmet is made of titanium, coated with a heat resistance material to help disperse heat - the inside is lined with black padding to provide comfort when the user is wearing it. The helmet's faceplate is made of a strong, glass-like material with the ability to polarize. When polarized, the helmet's faceplate has a silver blue color to it, and obscures the wearer's face completely. It also has a communicator in it.
The helmet provides excellent protection against small arms fire and small explosive attacks. The helmet is also essential in providing an ODST the ability to perform EVA and also provides a Heads-up display, giving the wearer basic information including a targeting reticle, weapon information, ammo capacity, and basic health readout. The newest version of the helmet integrates with the user's standard Neural Interface to provide more tactical data to the HUD. Helmet integrated neural interfaces is another piece of technology that has seen widespread adoption from Project Mjolnir. Along with this state-of-the-art equipment, the helmet is also equipped with its own thermal imaging and motion sensors.[8] The Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor/AA variant was developed as an improvement of the ODST helmet, indicating intended use by ODST personnel as well as SPARTAN-II or SPARTAN-III teams, ultimately it was used exclusively by Army airborne units.[9]
UpgradesEdit
ODST armor is compatible with several upgrades, including Up-Armor plates, a Command Network Module, a Hardened Uplink Module for MILINT acquisition, and a CBRN module for operations in hazard zones. This has only been seen used on SPARTANs who use the ODST helmet, however.
VISREdit
- Main article: Visual Intelligence System, Reconnaissance
The Visual Intelligence System, Reconnaissance or VISR, is issued with the ODST helmet. The VISR proprietary data management suite enables a user to link into UEG, CAA, and UNSC infrastructure systems at the local, national, and global levels - however actual access level is administered on a need/rating basis.[10] This allows the user to store and review mission content up to 610MB combined, the system also provides street level navigational data, and receive secure real-time mission data. In addition, every current issue helmet ODST BIOS A29.817941B.01 or later is equipped with low-light vision enhancement, which outlines hostile units in red, friendlies in green, weapons in blue, and objects of interest in yellow.[6]
RucksackEdit
The rucksack issued to ODSTs is, for all intents and purposes, an armored backpack that attaches to the back of the armored vest. The rucksack comes in a number of different variants. The main purpose is storage, which allows a trooper to store equipment, ranging from ammunition, to medical supplies, to explosives, to battery packs which provides power to any equipment an ODST may carry, and communications, which houses the necessary radio and satellite gear that an ODST squad requires to report in to their superiors. For longer missions, ODSTs can carry larger rucksacks with enough supplies for two weeks of operation without external resupply.[11] Rucksacks have integrated magnetic holding devices to allow for external back mounting of additional equipment. Equipment with magnetic properties, such as longer weaponry, can be carried externally over the rucksack eliminating the use of extra straps or slings.
Body SuitEdit
The ODST body suit is made up of several different layers and materials, the inner layer of the black-gray undersuit is made up of Kevlar material to aid in protecting the wearer from small arms fire, the inner layer also contains a heating and cooling system which regulates temperatures to keep the user warm or cool depending on the weather conditions - the heating and cooling system can also match infrared signatures of the current weather as well to allow an ODST to go undetected in hostile locations.[8] The outer layer of the undersuit is coated with a heat resistance material to aid in reducing temperatures experienced during orbital drop, and against Covenant Plasma Weapons. The body suit also doubles as a pressure suit to allow an ODST to perform EVA. The outer shell layer is comprised of Titanium and Ceramic composite armor plating that covers the chest, shoulders, legs and feet.
VariantsEdit
While the standard ODST BDU is fully capable for any role, there are specialized variants of the BDU - these suits are specifically issued to a specialist of a certain field to provide them certain advantages during an operation. As such, specialized gear is only available by Mission Conditional Requisition (MCR). Depending on mission requirements, an ODST operative may request either additional, or variant equipment that ranges from helmet attachments, gloves, battery, equipment or communication rucksack. The following is the specialized battle dress uniforms currently in use by the Navy.
ListEdit
Picture | Variant | Description |
---|---|---|
Marine Variants | ||
Close Quarters | While designated as a CQB suit, this variant is also issued to demolition experts in the field. This BDU is specifically designed to aid an ODST in CQB situations. The standard left pauldron is replaced with a longer two piece ballistic plate, which aids in protecting the trooper's upper body while in a firing stance, and also to reduce severe injury from plasma-based weaponry. The helmet is also issued with an optics device that aids the user in relaying images and video to teammates or command. | |
Sharpshooter | The Sharpshooter BDU is issued to sniper experts in the field. This BDU is designed to give an ODST sharpshooter more freedom in combat - the standard right pauldron is removed, allowing the sniper to aim better and move his arm more freely with a sniper rifle, while the standard left pauldron is replaced with a larger plate to protect the sniper's arm from counterattacks. The Sharpshooter variant is also issued with an optics device attached to the helmet, while the Oracle scope on the SRS99 can uplink to the user's HUD. | |
Recon | The Reconnaissance BDU is a specialized Office of Naval Intelligence variant of the ODST Armor. The armor is only issued to ONI reconnaissance agents for high risk operations. The undersuit is the same as the standard ODST armor. However, the chest plate is replaced with a specialized one, to provide stealth capabilities with little or no loss of endurance, specifically by reducing its IR signature and reflective surfaces. The torso part of the armor also varies from the standard version, having a green, translucent orb in the center. There are no shoulder plates issued with this variant, which allows more freedom of the arm movement. | |
N/A | Unnamed Variant | There are also variants or models of the ODST armor that have not been named; one example of this is a suit that ODSTs Gretchen, Dutch, and Romeo wore during a mission some time prior to the Battle of Ariel. It differed greatly from the normal ODST armor in that it bore a great resemblance to standard Marine armor. The chestplate that Romeo wore was olive drab in color, and appeared almost identical to those worn by the Marines. However, the armor retains the basic form of the ODST armor, with standard helmet and bodysuit pieces obviously shown. It is possible that this variant is either an earlier version of the armor or a field-expedient modification, or it could just be that the illustrator took artistic liberties. |
MJOLNIR Generation 2 Variants | ||
ODST | Due to the amount of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers being recruited to the SPARTAN-IV program, a port of the Generation 1 MJOLNIR to Generation 2 was created. It is different than the standard Marine variant, but is designed to be familiar.[12] The armor was tested by Cascade Stronghold Technologies in Mindoro, Cascade.[2] | |
Helljumper | A pet project of the CEO of Cascade Stronghold Technologies, Helljumper armor is in the prototyping phase and is in limited use in the Spartan Branch. The Helljumper helmet was originally going to be used by ODSTs, but delays forced it to be used by GEN2 wearers.[13] |
GameplayEdit
Halo 3Edit
The ODST battle helmet is available as an armor permutation in the Halo 3 Skyrim combat music replacer list. Multiplayer component. The SPARTAN version of the helmet differs from the standard version in the polarization color of its visor; regular ODST helmets have blue/silver polarization, while the Mjolnir ODST helmet retains the gold electroplating possessed by most Mjolnir armor. It is attained and unlocked by the Spartan Graduate Achievement, or by earning 5 XP in Matchmaking.[4]
Halo: ReachEdit
The shoulder pauldrons, breastplate, and helmet of the ODST armor are also available for purchase in The Armory in Halo: Reach.[14][15]
Halo 4Edit
GEN2 ODST armor is available as an armor permutation in Halo 4's multiplayer. The armor can be acquired through the Infinity Armor Pack as a part of the Champions Bundle.
TriviaEdit
- The ODST armor is derived from the first concept of the Mjolnir armor. This original concept done by artist Shi Kai Wang was scrapped because it made John-117 look 'too mean.'[16]
- The visor's ability to polarize, the VISR mode, and the HUD it displays may mean it has a transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screen coating it.
- The Good Samaritan achievement unlocks the ODST armor for your Xbox Live Avatar if the user has Halo Waypoint. It is listed under the 'Awards' section when customizing the avatar.
- Mega Bloks has produced three sets of ODSTs with complete armor. They are equipped with three weapon types: Battle Rifle and Sniper Carbine; Rocket Launcher and Submachine Gun; as well as Shotgun with dual pistols. They also come with their insertion pods and a combat backpack. These troops are featured in different packages.
- Other sets have been released that include ODSTs as well as other drop pod sets.
